Mr. Samon’s 7th grade ELA students put their hours of experience viewing crime shows to use when they became detectives for a day. Split into two teams, each class received the background story of a murder that occurred the night before, and were tasked with solving the mystery in under 60 minutes. The biggest difficulty was determining which of the 40+ pieces of evidence were essential to their understanding of the crime, and which ones were not related to the case at all. The students loved the activity, and made great strides in further developing their inquiry skills, collaboration skills, and communication skills. The students had an enjoyable experience and were able to cite evidence to support their claims.
